Sign in with GitHub or Google¶
Signing up¶
On the register page, choose Sign up with GitHub or Sign up with Google. After you sign in with the provider, your Report URI account is created with the email address the provider has verified for you, and you are signed in straight away. There is no activation email to wait for, because the provider has already confirmed the address.
If an account already uses that email address, a new one is not created and the provider is not linked to it automatically. Sign in to the existing account the usual way, then link the provider from your settings.
GitHub only gives us your primary email address, and only once you have verified it with GitHub. If you have not, verify it on GitHub first, or register with your email address instead.
Signing in¶
On the login page, choose Continue with GitHub or Continue with Google. If the provider account is linked to a Report URI account, you are signed in to it.
If it is not linked to any account, we ask before doing anything: you can create a new account with that email address, or sign in the usual way if you already have an account under a different address.
Two-factor authentication still applies¶
Signing in with a provider replaces your password, not your second factor. If you have TOTP or passkeys turned on, you are asked for them after signing in with GitHub or Google, just as you are after entering your password.
Linking a provider¶
To add GitHub or Google as a way to sign in to an existing account, go to the Settings page and click Link GitHub or Link Google in the Authentication section. You confirm with your current password, then sign in with the provider.
Each provider account can be linked to one Report URI account, and each Report URI account can link one account per provider.
Linking needs your password because it adds a new way into your account. If your account has no password, because you signed up with a provider, set one first.
Unlinking a provider¶
Click Unlink next to the provider on the Settings page. If your account has a password, you confirm with it.
You cannot unlink a provider if it is the only way left to sign in to your account. Set a password first.
Accounts without a password¶
An account created by signing up with GitHub or Google has no password. A few things work slightly differently until you set one:
- Changing your email address or password, and turning TOTP or passkeys on or off, are confirmed with your password, so Settings asks you to set one first.
- Signing out other sessions and changing your API key are confirmed in the dialog without a password.
- Deleting your report data or your account is confirmed by email: we send a link to your address, which you open while signed in to finish.
To set a password, click Set a Password on the Settings page. We email you a link to confirm it, and the password is set on the page that link opens, while you are signed in. You can keep using your provider to sign in as well.
Single sign-on¶
If your organisation enforces SSO for your email domain, you cannot sign in or sign up with GitHub or Google using an address on that domain. You are sent to your organisation's identity provider instead, the same as with a password.
